State’s recycling rate remains above 50 percent

(LACEY)- Washington state’s recycling rate reached just above 50 percent in 2012, the second year in a row the rate exceeded the 50-percent goal set by state law. The figures were reported today by the state Ecology department.

State residents and businesses recycled ninety-thousand tons – or about 2 percent – less in 2012 than the previous year. This resulted in a slight drop in the recycling rate.

Washington residents recycled more than 4.4 million tons of material in 2012, equal to 3.5 pounds recycled per person per day. Glass, gypsum, and organic materials such as food and yard debris showed the biggest gains in recycling.
