Weekend closure of SR 9 begins Friday night near Whatcom-Skagit county line

(WICKERSHAM)– Drivers on State Route 9 should plan for a full weekend closure of the highway near the Whatcom-Skagit county line starting at 8 p.m. on Friday.  The full closure will be preceded by three days of single-lane closures and minor delays while crews start work on a culvert replacement project to improve fish passage underneath SR 9.  Drivers can expect single-lane traffic and flagging starting tomorrow through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.  At 8 p.m. Friday, crews will close both lanes of SR 9 between Royer Street and NP Road to remove the existing culvert and install a new, larger culvert. Crews will reopen the highway to single-lane traffic by 5 a.m. Monday.  During the weekend closure, signs will direct drivers at various locations along SR 9 – from SR 542 at Nugent’s Corner to Sedro-Woolley – to alternate routes.  After another week of flagger-controlled lane closures, road crews should wrap up most of the work on the highway.  The project is expected to be complete by the end of September.
